This past Sunday, Mrs. Right was found. All 11 of the lovely ladies exemplified the Golden Standard, participating in various segments that led to the ultimate honor.
This year’s elegant event commenced with the opening fanfare, a creative dance number performed by the contestants in black and gold attire. This was followed by the presentation of contestants, each telling their name, year and major. The masters of ceremony, Whitney Judson and Tunji Adebayo, did an exceptional job keeping the crowd entertained and engaged throughout the program.
The judges were introduced which included Eta Iota Lambda Chapter (Athens, GA) President Brother Samaad Keys, Assistant Director of UGA Career Consulting Michelle Carter, UGA Residence Hall Director Demarcus Merritt and Miss Black and Gold Georgia 2011, Destinee Derline.
A brief history of Miss Black and Gold was given. The ladies then presented their scholarship platforms, followed by the swimwear, talent , eveningwear and extemporaneous speaking competitions. Miss Black and Gold Georgia 2011, Destinee Derline graced the stage with updates on her platform campaign, as well as her well wishes for her successor.
Entertainment was provided by the Pamoja Dance Company and was followed by a presentation of special awards and the finalists.
Reigning Miss Black and Gold, UGA Crystal Mitchell entered the stage to pass down her crown and present this year’s awards. Contestant Jessica Hobbs was named Miss Congeniality, as well as Miss People’s Choice, a special award voted on by the general population. Rashaida Melvin was named Miss Black (2nd runner up) and Corinthia Hayes was awarded Miss Gold (1st runner up). Mrs. Right was found at the end of the night, with Jordan Hartgens being named 2011 Miss Black and Gold, UGA. If you wish to find out more on this year’s recipient, click here.
